Have you ever noticed something funny?
The minute someone says... "Don't think about a pink elephant."
What immediately pops into your mind? A pink elephant.
Your brain creates the picture before it processes the word don't.
That's why it pays to pay attention to the pictures you're constantly giving your mind.
How often do we tell ourselves exactly what we don't want?
"I don't want to fail."
"I don't want to lose money."
"I hope I don't embarrass myself."
Without realizing it, we've handed our brain a picture of the very thing we're trying to avoid.
The same thing happens when we talk to other people.
Instead of saying...
"Don't forget your keys."
Try...
"Remember your keys."
Instead of...
"Don't eat on the couch."
Say...
"Please eat at the kitchen table."
Instead of...
"Don't be late."
Say...
"Be here by 9:00."
Can you hear the difference?
One gives the brain a warning. The other gives it a destination.
Great parents, coaches, and leaders spend more time telling people what TO DO than what NOT TO DO.
Experienced skiers know this.
If they keep thinking, "Don't hit the trees!"
Guess what they see? Trees.
Instead, they focus on the open path.
Pilots use the same principle.
They train themselves to focus on where they want the aircraft to go—not on the obstacle they're trying to avoid.
Now imagine getting into an Uber and saying, "Whatever you do, don't drive to the airport."
The driver would probably look at you and ask, "Okay...where DO you want to go?"
Exactly!
Your brain works much the same way.
It needs a destination, not just a warning.
Instead of saying...
"I don't want to fail."
Say...
"I'm preparing to succeed."
Instead of...
"I don't want to be stressed."
Say...
"I'm creating more peace and balance."
Instead of...
"I don't want to gain weight."
Say...
"I'm making healthy choices every day."
Here's your challenge.
For the next 24 hours, become the "Don't Detective."
Every time you hear yourself say...
- don't
- can't
- won't
- shouldn't
or...
"I hope I don't..."
Stop. Then ask yourself one simple question...
"What DO I want instead?"
Give your brain a destination, not just a warning.
Because your future is shaped less by what you're trying to avoid and far more by what you're choosing to focus on.
After all, your brain is always listening. Make sure you're giving it directions worth following.
If this idea resonated with you, imagine what happens when you learn to consciously direct not only your thoughts—but your entire life.
That's the work I do with my private coaching clients and during my VIP Personal Vision Quest Days here in Virginia Beach.
This isn't about quick fixes or temporary motivation.
It's about helping you gain the clarity to see where you're headed, identify what's quietly holding you back, and create a compelling vision for what comes next.
Together, we'll uncover:
• the habits and beliefs that may be limiting your success
• where you're focusing on problems instead of possibilities
• and how to train your mind to consistently move toward greater confidence, peace, purpose, abundance, and freedom.
Because the quality of your future depends on the direction you're giving your mind today.
If you're ready for that kind of transformation, I'd love to help.
