When Life Feels Too Much....
Let’s be honest life doesn’t wait for January to pile things onto your plate. The undone projects, the unanswered emails, the “I’ll get to it later” list… it can all sneak up on you. Suddenly, you’re wishing for the adult equivalent of Linus’ blanket from the Peanuts cartoon, something soft and safe to hide under.
Here’s the truth: overwhelm happens to all of us. But you are not powerless. You can take back control of your energy and mindset starting right now.
I want to share a few of my favorite reset strategies. Print these out, tape them to your fridge or vision board, and use them anytime life feels like “too much.”
1. Retreat to Your Inner Shangri-La
Even if you can’t escape your circumstances, you can escape in your mind. Close your eyes and imagine being in your favorite peaceful place, a mountaintop, a quiet forest, a beach at sunset. Research proves that visualizing nature calms your nervous system and lowers stress. Your imagination is your sanctuary. Use it!
2. Breathe Like You Mean It
When anxiety hijacks your body, your breath brings you back. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a count of four, and exhale slowly. Within minutes, your heart rate slows, your muscles relax, and you remember you’re the one in charge here.
3. Rewire Your Thoughts with Power Declarations
If you can think yourself into stress, you can think yourself out of it. Try these declarations:
- “I am calm and cool under all circumstances.”
- “I let go and relax.”
- “I am in control of my thoughts and actions.”
- “I love and honor myself.”
Repeat them. Believe them. Pair them with uplifting music or a motivational podcast and watch your energy shift.
4. Reward Yourself Without Guilt
Too often we put everyone else first and forget to refill our own tank. Do something that makes you feel special; whether it’s a bubble bath, a walk in the sun, or a new book. Remember: bad days don’t last, but your self-respect should.
5. Shift into Gratitude
Here’s a magic trick: it’s impossible to be stressed and grateful at the same time. Start naming what’s good right now, your health, your loved ones, your home, even the hot coffee in your hand. What you focus on expands, so feed the positive.
6. Look Forward with Excitement
Frustration shrinks when you fuel your imagination with what’s ahead. Ask yourself: What adventures can I create? What’s the next big joy waiting for me? Keep your eyes on possibility and watch your spirit rise.
You don’t need a “new year” to start fresh; you need a decision.
Take one of these tools and put it into practice today. You’ll be amazed how quickly you can move from overwhelmed to unstoppable.
Love and Light,
Lee Milteer
