Let me share a lesson that changed my life forever. When I was a shy rancher’s daughter growing up in the middle of nowhere, I came home from high school one day to find a cruel letter in the mailbox. Some girls from school had written nasty things about me, and for a few days, I let it crush my spirit.
My father noticed my sadness, saddled up our horses, and took me for a ride. As we rode through the fields, he said words I will never forget:
“Lee, you are never going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Some people will dislike you no matter what you do, what you wear, or what you say. But others will love you for being yourself. Those are your people. Never follow the crowd; they are weak-minded and easily manipulated. You were born an original. Don’t change yourself so others will like you. Be who you are, and life will take care of the rest.”
That advice shaped my entire life and career. Especially now, when so many people are afraid to speak their truth or show who they really are. We live in a time when being politically correct has turned into walking on eggshells. But here’s the truth: blending in is the fastest way to disappear. Playing small doesn’t serve your purpose or your bank account.
You are not meant to be everyone’s cup of tea. You are meant to be a bold, authentic, one-of-a-kind creation. When you water yourself down to please others, you betray your own soul. When you stand tall in your truth, you attract the right people, opportunities, and abundance into your world.
Authenticity isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being real. When your words and actions align with your heart, that’s when you tap into your life purpose and power. The clients and friends who truly resonate with you will find you when you show up as yourself, not as who you think the world wants you to be.
Dan Kennedy once told me, “Be your real self. That’s what people are drawn to.” And he was right. The people who align with your energy will admire your courage, your integrity, and your truth. The others will drift away, and that’s a blessing.
So stop waiting for permission to live your life out loud. Give yourself the freedom to be fully you in your business, relationships, and creative expression. The most exhausting thing in the world is trying to please everyone. The most liberating thing is deciding that you don’t have to.
As my father said, “I might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they’ll remember me as a double shot of whiskey.”
Be bold. Be remembered. And build a legacy that could only have come from you.
