When you’re having “one of those days” where nothing seems to go right, you’re feeling overwhelmed, or just “off” (what I call “Character-Building Days”) here are some helpful tips to regain control of your day.
Print these out for your ‘fridge, right next to the emergency phone numbers:
Tip 1: Break Out a Pattern Interrupt
What you focus on mentally can tell your body to be relaxed or stressed, so interrupt the thought pattern that’s upsetting you with a calming one.
Here’s how: Get to a place where you can be alone. Then imagine yourself in your favorite place or a quiet, peaceful location such as a cool, green forest, a lofty mountaintop, or pristine, sandy beach – a mental Shangri-La. The University of Delaware has done studies proving that picturing a quiet natural scene in your mind will significantly reduce your stress. Your Mind is the Controller of how you feel!
Tip 2: Say These Declarations Out Loud
- I am calm and cool under all circumstances.
- I am in control of my life; I now can let go and relax.
- I am now in control of all my thoughts and actions.
- I am very effective and efficient in stressful situations.
- I love and honor myself.
- I have a positive attitude that I can handle myself in all situations.
- I am focused only on the NOW. Right now, I am safe and OK.
Tip 3: Listen Up
Take the time to listen to emotionally rewarding and uplifting music, or an audio program that reminds you of your personal power.
Tip 4: Exercise
Physical movement is another positive way to change your mood – and it has long-term benefits.
Tip 5: Breathe Deeply
Breathe slowly and deeply several times. When your heart is racing because of anxious feelings, deep breathing slows it down and allows you to feel in control again. Deep breathing is also an effective form of muscle relaxation.
Tip 6: Reward Yourself
Give yourself permission to have some positive personal rewards – anything that empowers you to feel special!
Tip 7: Be Grateful
There is nothing like Gratitude to remind you that, no matter how bad your day is right now, you still have positive things in your life. Be grateful for what is good in your life right now.
The more we focus on what is good in our life, the less time we have to focus on what we are unhappy about. The truth is, no matter how bad your day is, someone else in the world would look at you as being lucky.
You must realize that the way to find happiness is to look for what is good in your life. The universal truth of life is this: What you focus on expands. So focus on the blessings you have! Sit down and write out your own personal Gratitude list.
Tip 8: Look Forward to the Future
Imagine what wonderful adventures you can experience and create for yourself and your family.
Always keep in mind that bad days don’t last, that “this too shall pass.” Empower yourself to always control your emotions with your thoughts – and remember to love yourself.
